Vancouver is the southernmost Washington state city located on the north bank of the Columbia River. It borders Portland, Oregon and has a population of approximately 165,000 people. It is the county seat of Clark County and is considered the largest suburb of the greater Portland-metro area.
The area that is now Vancouver was originally inhabited by the Chinook and Klickitat native American tribes. Vancouver itself was established in 1825 as a fur trading outpost, though it wasn’t officially incorporated until 1857. Its location was chosen for its proximity to Fort Vancouver. Famous cartographer Meriwether Lewis said of the area “it is the only desired situation for settlement west of the Rocky Mountains.”
These days, it is a populous metropolitan city divided into east, west and downtown Vancouver. A large annexation in 1997 added over 11,000 acres to the city’s total area. It is known as a port city through which over 400 ocean-going vessels pass annually. A project to revitalize Vancouver’s historic downtown has been underway since the early 2000s and has resulted in the construction of many new condos, hotels and retail shops.
